"MLS" stands for Multiple Listing Service. They are private with membership restricted only to MLS subscribing real estate licensees. Around the United States there are over 100 MLS's. Each one is primary to a certain area, where agents in that area have membership. My office MLS membership is with Bright MLS, which is the primary MLS to my primary service area. MLS's then send their listings out to public facing sites like Zillow, Realtor.com, and so forth.
Including MLS carries a cost, in the forms of monetary dues and time for compliance with MLS rules. Back in my heyday I was a member of around 100 MLS's at a cost of around $6,000 monthly. Therefore a reduced commission could be offered to a seller client who does not require the local primary MLS, using instead another MLS as the listing portal to the public sites. In my case, this would be sellers outside of the Bright MLS primary territory using Bright MLS.
